Mežakla’s greatest treasure is its forests. The Slovenian alpine beech forest prevails, and the undergrowth is covered by three-leaved anemone (Anemono trifoliae–Fagetum). In the past beech trees were felled for the needs of the ironworks and charcoal burning, which is why a secondary spruce forest developed on the acidic soil (Adenstylo glabrae–Piceetum).
During the national liberation movement (1941-1945) several armed fights took place in Mežakla between the German occupiers and the partisans. Following various acts of sabotage by the partisans in the valley, the German army took retaliatory measures. In September 1941, they burned down Luckmanova koča (Luckman’s hut), which was located in the Zakopi area. Wooden remains and the frame of the burned down hut were used by the partisans in December 1942 to build a hospital - a modest shelter nearby that was used to treat the wounded. A memorial on a natural rock can be found in Zakopi to commemorate these events.

In the last third of the 19th Century, Kranjska industrijska družba played an important role in managing the forests of Mežakla and the ironworks in its vicinity. A few charcoal piles were operated during this time in Mežakla. The photo shows men transporting the charcoal on sledges (early 20th Century).
Luckmanova koča (Luckman’s hut) once stood in Zakopi, but was burned down by the German occupiers in September 1941 during their assault on a platoon of the Jesenice squad.
